ЁЯХК️The Book of Leviticus
ЁЯХК️The Book of Leviticus — Holiness, Sacrifice, and Worship
A guide to worship and living in God's presence
ЁЯУШMeaning of the Name
Hebrew Title: Vayikra (╫Хַ╫Щִּ╫зְ╫иָ╫Р) — meaning "And He called." (from Leviticus 1:1)
Greek/English Title: Leviticus — meaning "pertaining to the Levites."
Although the Levites (priests) play a major role, this book is for all Israel, teaching how to worship and live in the presence of God.
ЁЯХп️Purpose of the Book
Exodus ends with God's glory filling the Tabernacle — but no one could enter (Exodus 40:34–35).
Leviticus answers how sinful people can live and worship in fellowship with a holy God.
ЁЯУЪStructure of Leviticus

ЁЯФе1. The Way to God — The Sacrificial System (Ch. 1–17)
God provides five offerings to restore fellowship between the people and Himself.

These sacrifices taught that forgiveness requires blood, pointing forward to Christ's perfect sacrifice.
ЁЯССThe Priestly Role (Ch. 8–10)
The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons
Priests were mediators between God and the people.
They offered sacrifices and taught God's laws.
Nadab and Abihu's Sin
Aaron's sons offered "strange fire" — unauthorized worship — and died before the Lord (Lev 10:1–2).
Lesson: God must be worshiped His way, not ours.
ЁЯТзClean and Unclean Laws (Ch. 11–15)
These chapters distinguish between clean and unclean things, symbolizing purity and holiness.
| Category | Examples | Lesson |
|---|---|---|
| Clean vs. Unclean Animals | Fish with fins/scales, no pork, etc. | Holiness in daily choices |
| Purity after Childbirth / Disease | Laws of cleansing (Lev 12–14) | God's concern for life and health |
| Leprosy & Contamination | Isolation and cleansing rituals | Sin separates, cleansing restores |
All these laws taught that God's people must be distinct — morally, spiritually, and physically.
ЁЯТАThe Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) — Leviticus 16
This is the holiest day in Israel's calendar.
Once a year, the High Priest enters the Most Holy Place.
Offers sacrifices for all Israel's sins.
Two goats are chosen:
- ЁЯРР One is sacrificed for sin.
- ЁЯРР The other (the scapegoat) is released into the wilderness, symbolizing the removal of guilt.
This points directly to Jesus, our eternal High Priest, whose blood takes away sin forever (Hebrews 9–10).
ЁЯТО2. The Walk with God — Holiness in Daily Life (Ch. 18–27)
After atonement comes application — holy living.
Moral Purity (Ch. 18–20)
Commands about sexual morality, honesty, justice, and compassion.
Key phrase: "Be holy, for I am holy."
Idolatry, witchcraft, and immorality are forbidden.
Priestly Holiness (Ch. 21–22)
Priests must remain pure and blameless in service.
Holiness in leadership reflects God's holiness.
Festivals and Worship (Ch. 23)
God appoints seven sacred feasts for Israel's worship:
Meaning: Deliverance from Egypt
Fulfilled in Christ: Christ our Passover (1 Cor 5:7)
Meaning: Purity from sin
Fulfilled in Christ: Jesus' sinless body
Meaning: Thanksgiving for harvest
Fulfilled in Christ: Christ's resurrection
Meaning: Outpouring of blessing
Fulfilled in Christ: Holy Spirit given (Acts 2)
Meaning: Call to repentance
Fulfilled in Christ: Future gathering of saints

Social Justice and Care (Ch. 25)
Sabbath Year & Jubilee: Every 7th and 50th year, land rests, slaves go free, debts are forgiven.
God reminds His people that He is the true owner of the land and all life.
