Apostle Paul
Date Written
Around AD 48–50 (Paul's earliest letter)
Place
Antioch or Corinth
Audience
The Churches of Galatia (modern-day Turkey)
Purpose
To correct false teachers (Judaizers) who insisted Christians must obey the Law of Moses to be saved, to defend the Gospel of grace through faith, to remind believers that they are free in Christ, not slaves to rituals

Key Verse

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free; stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery."

— Galatians 5:1

Background

  • After Paul preached the Gospel in Galatia, some Jewish teachers (called Judaizers) followed him and told believers that faith in Christ was not enough — they must also keep the Mosaic Law (especially circumcision).
  • Paul writes passionately to defend the truth.

"A man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ." — Galatians 2:16

Structure of Galatians

Section Chapters Focus Theme
1. Defense of Paul's Apostleship 1–2 Paul's authority from God, not men Gospel received by revelation
2. Defense of the True Gospel 3–4 Salvation by faith, not by law Abraham's faith vs. legalism
3. Life in Christian Freedom 5–6 Living by the Spirit Freedom through love and service

1️⃣ Paul's Apostolic Defense (Ch. 1–2)

  • The Galatians were turning to another gospel (1:6–7).
  • Paul insists his message came directly from Jesus Christ, not human teachers.
  • He recounts his confrontation with Peter, who acted hypocritically by withdrawing from Gentiles.

"If I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ." — Galatians 1:10
"I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me." — Galatians 2:20

2️⃣ Faith vs. Law (Ch. 3–4)

Contrast Law Faith
Source Moses Abraham
Purpose To reveal sin To justify through grace
Result Brings bondage Brings freedom
Symbol Hagar (slave woman) Sarah (free woman)
  • Paul teaches that the Law was a tutor — showing our sin, not saving us.
  • Faith makes us sons and daughters of God, not slaves.

"You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus." — Galatians 3:26
"If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed." — Galatians 3:29

3️⃣ Freedom in Christ (Ch. 5–6)

  • Paul now moves from theology to lifestyle — If we are saved by faith, how should we live?
  • Stand firm in freedom. Don't return to the yoke of the Law.
  • Walk in the Spirit, not in the flesh.
  • Bear one another's burdens with love.

"The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control." — Galatians 5:22–23
